Barrack, The Preacher

BARRACK, THE PREACHER

I had not known that our President was the nation's beacon of moral rectitude until he conferenced called 1400 clergy to protest the peoples violation of eighth commandment by bearing false witness against his attempt to socialize medicine and place him in complete control.

Shame on you peasants and serfs for bearing false witness against your president’s plan to deprive you of your freedom and liberty.  Shame on you for not applauding his plan to subject you to the “discretion” of his government’s bureaucrats in the dispensation of medical treatments and medicines.  Shame on you seniors for protecting yourselves and your spouses.  Shame on you for attempting to thwart his will to preserve the lives of 16 year old illegal trespassing thieves of jobs, goods and services while withholding health care to your aged, broken-down, wasted, and frail, non-productive bodies.  Don’t you know you have a moral obligation to nourish your brothers and sisters and die gracefully?  And, don’t you know that those illegal trespassers will have a lot children who will vote Democrat for years to come: while you, you wretch, will only cast one vote for another term or two; and, you might even vote for a conservative?

No, you can’t pray in schools.  No, he won’t quit killing the unborn and no, he won’t quit launching bombs from drones to kill innocent women and children. No, he won’t quit sending young American men and women with wives and children into harm’s way.   No, he won’t quit dispatching his SEIU and Acorn goons to forcefully prohibit the exercise of your First Amendment rights.  No, he won’t quit enriching his pals with taxpayers’ money.   No, he won’t quit lying about this being the richest country in the world when its 12 trillion dollars in debt, unless, of course, he’s counting your hard earned tax paid savings and investments as the country’s property.   No, he won’t go to church or hold prayer breakfasts.  Don’t you know that the second, fifth, sixth, eighth and ninth commandments have no application to him.

Don’t you know that the First Amendment only applies when it supports his sectarian socialism? How sinful you are!  Don’t you know that God commands you to love your neighbor not as yourself, but more than yourself, and that he, too, is your neighbor?

GUNS AT PROTESTS - BRING 'EM ON!

Guns, including a military style rifle were openly carried to (but not into) an Arizona Townhall.  Spooky, no doubt, to be near some folks exercising their Second Amendment rights.  They seem to have a chilling effect upon a burly SEIU goon who would beat a much smaller man for handing out "Don't Tread On Me" flags.  I've owned guns and enjoyed them very much.  It was very gratifying to score well on the pistol range and I enjoyed cleaning them, making bullets, and comparing them with friends' pieces.  I voluntarily gave them up when I moved into Chicago because only cops and gangbangers are permitted to have guns.  I never carried a concealed weapon, never aimed at a person or animal, never fired a shot in anger, and never had an accidental discharge.  I felt much less secure in the city without a gun -- the burglars, rapists, robbers, and home invaders were a real threat to my family in our neighborhood.  Nevertheless, I accepted the trade off gracefully.  Less personal protection for more public protection -- never a fear of my aresenal being stolen or any of the guns being put to a unlawful use.  But, now?  Now, I want my guns back!

The beating and kicking of the street vendor in St. Louis outside a TH was the wider opening of an already wary eye.  Anyone who doesn't think the SEIU's presence was instigated by the White House or one of its many minions is under a deleterious influence.  Then the arrival of Acorn at other venues and their crowding out of unorganized folks -- couples, families and individuals was a real spit in the face.  When the WH said "we'll strike back twice as hard," the goons showed up in a matter of a few hours.  And when the feckless Sibelius encourage them to "keep it up,"  I could have locked and loaded, if only I'd had a gun.  When Obama remained silent, he might as well have said, "O.K. you conservative sons of b-----s, do you want some too?"  In- stead, he spends an afternoon in the Rose Garden race baiting with that simpleton Gates.

This is community organizing Chicago style.  Acorn once invaded a city council meeting with force and they've invaded many boards of director and shareholder meetings of banks and other private enterprises.  Prior to Acorn, I witnessed the '68 riots outside the Democratic National Conventions.  This was community organized by Bill Ayers pals in the Students for a Democatic Society.  "If you want to know who I am, look at who I associate myself with."  Then there was the "burn, baby, burn" reaction to the assasination of the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr..  Chicago history records many instances of insurrection, riots, and mob violence.  The famous Haymarket riots and the Pullman labor strife are just two examples.  Saul Alinsky, author of  the Handbook for Radicals, laid it all out and his methods have been and are being followed as matter of achieving and retaining political power.  Those who use them are convinced that they and they alone know what the greater good is for the majority of the minority, that eggs must be broken and that the end justifies the means.  Finally, with the election of Barrack Obama, those anguished souls who have suffered so grieviously under theBush administration, and the lash of the majority of the majority, are free at last, free at last, to impose their gracious wills on the rest of us.

They (Obama and the left wing democrats) have wasted no time in attacking (with a vengeance) private enterprise with over a trillion dollar commitment of your money.  Come hell or highwater (expect both) they will beat the smokestacks into windmills and chase the factories and their jobs across our borders.  Not to worry about illegal immigrants.  They will follow the jobs and soon caucasian Americans (if there are any left) will be using the same tunnels to enter Mexico -- not only for jobs, but for improved health care, education and tax free cerveza.

By god, they're going to change this "downright evil" country into something Michelle Obama can be proud of -- and you better like it -- or else!

I am so glad that ego and circumstances have caused "the one we've been waiting for" to give us a peek at what a collective life under a regimented dictatorial regime will be.  Don't you know you'll be ever so happy.  Grandma can luck out and spend her final days in the 5,000 litter Rahm and Izzy Emanuel Hospice.  You know, the hospice with the Code Pink wing and the castellated morphine tank.  And, when she's finally called home, it will be but a short procession to the chute at the end of the hall leading directly to the Nancy Pelosi Crematorium.

Well, Obama supporters, you have been baited, hooked and switched and switched and switched.  But don't despair.  Have the audacity to hope that in 2010 the majorities of both the majority and the minority will vote for any one other than an Obama democrat.

Meanwhile, I want my guns back.

Mike Snyder, Deerfield, Illinois.

POLITICS AND POLEMICS

I was just watching Kirsten Powers (FNC's resident Democrat apologist) and a former Bush assistant press secretary discussing the health care legislation.  While I've seen and heard it ad nauseum from numerous different sources, in or on several different media, I was struck by a certain worthless and foolish non-argument being made by Powers in response to a comment made by her opposite.  He was supporting a suggestion by a Florida congressman that the present bill, s.r. 3200, should be scrapped and that the parties should start from scratch with a meaningful bipartisan debate  to craft a statute more generally acceptable.  Whereupon, Kirsten commenced talking over him and sarcastically saying much to the effect of -- how could any worthwhile debate be had if you're going to talk about "death panels."  And she kept on this like a broken record -- clearly striving to simply drown out her opposite and foreclose any further discussion.  That was a perfect example of why we, as a people generally, are getting no closer together, growing further apart, hardening our positions, becoming less tolerant of others points of view, and becoming more willing to more quickly dimiss others with whom we do not agree.  Conservatives don't suffer fools gladly.

"Death panels" had not been mentioned, and, in fact, that section is being deleted by popular demand.  So it was a moot point that added nothing to the discussion.  So many of these liberal pundits speak and express thoughts that are totally irrelevant to the issue under discussion, waste a great deal of valuable air time, and are counterproductive.  Not only are they counterproductive to a resolution of the core issue, but they are counterproductive to even conducting a discourse.  "There is no point in having a debate because I am going to object to my opponent's categorization of end of life counselling as 'death panels' even if he never mentions them."

The retorts of Democrat pundits are predictable.  Confronted with any contemporaneious misstep by a democrat or a liberal, the response begins with "how is that any different from Bush killing babies and puppies....... Haliburton overcharging....Blackwater killing......Foley pursuing......," or any other untruthful, irrelevant, immaterial, or inconsequential historical event.  They have mastered the subterfuges of evasion and obfuscation.  Whenever I watch them, I think of computerized customer service: "if you don't believe 1, press 2 for additional choices, 3 for "he's lying," 4 for "all the polls indicate," 5 for "his plan will simply waste ------- and pander to ------- vested interests ------- lobbyists------ and street walkers," 6 "destroy the job market/economy/health/culture/environment," 7 "open the floodgates," or 8 "have a chilling effect upon."

A perfect example is Hillary's remarks to an African audience.  They were so predictable and quintessentially Democrat:  (paraphrasing) 'Our elections are not always perfect either.  Take the election of 2,000 for example.  It came down to one state and the election was lost.  The winner's brother was the governor of that state.  [Raise eyebrows, blink, wink and wiggle]'.  Never mind that her remark, if inferred as intended, would discredit the integrity of our elections and the American political system, it would also portray a republican governor as an election fraud and so it was well worth it.

I had hoped that when the Democrats swept the federal elections, they would finally stop whining and turn to trumpeting their wonderful promised accomplishments.  I mean after all, for eight  long years they had been planning for this triumph.  They knew every fault of a bad government.  They had kept book on President Bush and minutely detailed, micrographed, photographed, and lithographed every real and imaged mistake.  They had in this eight year hiatus perfected their already vast knowledge of all things political, economical and governmental and accumulated even more knowledge and perfected a diplomacy of reconciliation and appeasement that had no historical equal.  Moreover, they had acquired a mastery of banking and investment banking, auto manufacturing, and health insurance   Of course, its hard to trumpet a four fold increase in the national debt, a 25% increase in unemployment, an additional 25,000 young men at risk in Afghanistan, and a swine flu epidemic.  So, after a two month respite, they're back on the defense and whining about the unpatriotic Astroturf americans who aren't buying their lemons.

In Kirsten's defense, I will say that she had been put in a tough spot by Katherine (?) Sibelius who was stating that nowwithstanding what she said yesterday about the abandonment of the "government option,"  it had not been abandoned, and even though she voted for it  before she voted against it, she's now voting for it again.

I think that if I were Kirsten, I would take two aspirin and consider another line of work.

BARRY TO GRANDMA

Just as Andy Martin may be getting close to proving Barry wasn't born in Hawaii, Barry's 86 year old grandmother suddenly becomes ill.  Perhaps the thought of having to fess up to Barry's birthplace was enough to make her sick.  Barry suddenly feels compelled to depart the campaign trail and fly to Hawii to visit her.  Goodbye grandma.  I hope she recovers or at least is capable of giving Andy a court ordered deposition de bene esse.   If, heaven forbid, she dies, may she rest in peace with Don Young.

PLUMBER TO THE RESCUE

We all now know that the economic melt down was precipitated by substandard loans to non-creditworthy borrowers. A Clinton idea to give everyone an opportunity to own a home which he brought to reality by his 1995 Amendments to the 1977 Community Reinvestment Act. Iced by regulations which forced Fannie and Freddy to underwrite subprime loans to rabbits, and that forced bankers to make them, the fox was loosed and the chase was on. Meanwhile, back at the kennel, hounds Johnny and W were muzzled and leashed by Barney, Chris and Chuck. Now that there’s nothing more for the fox to eat, enters Barack with the solution. Repeal the CRA? Never! Take the money from the plumber and give it to the rabbits.

Biden on Bankruptcy

During the Palin-Biden debate, Biden made an incredible statement that defines the essential difference between democrats and republicans and between socialism and capitalism. He said he thought that a bankruptcy judge should not only have the power to lower a debtor's mortgage interest rate, but that he should have the power to lower the principal amount as well.

Think about that and think where that would lead. Assume a debtor owes $100,000 on a $125,000 home and is paying 7% interest. Assume the debtor files bankruptcy and by luck of the random selection process draws a very liberal judge. Assume the judge, intending to prevent a foreclosure, lowers the debtor's interest rate to 1% less than the bank pays for the money it borrows and lowers the principal amount to $50,000.

Consider, that by taking $50,000 from the bank, that there is $50,000 that the bank will never recover and $50,000 that a creditworthy customer can't borrow. The judge trashed the mortgage and trampled on the common law right of "freedom of contract" that has been determined to be a Constitutional right under the Fifth Amendment which provides "No person. . . shall be deprived of . . .property, without due process of law." That has been the law since at least 1904 (Great Southern Fire Proof Hotel Company v. Jones, 193 U.S. 532). But, of course, with another liberal judge or two on the Supreme Court, who prefer to play midnight golf with the law rather than adhere to the Constitution, that could change.

No longer could you depend upon a court enforcing a written contract. "I've got it in writing" would no longer have any meaning. A bankruptcy case would become a crap shoot with the outcome dependent upon the liberality or conservatism of the judge. "Equal Justice Under Law?"  Fugedaboudit.

Such an action would be a purely socialistic taking from a deserving one and giving to an undeserving one. And that take us back to how we got into this mess by purposely granting large loans to non-creditworthy borrowers with no money down and adjustable rate mortgages.

Is that where you want to be led?

Audacity of Hopelessness

Subject: AUDACITY OF HOPELESSNESS
The Democrats have been on a campaign to destroy Bush and the GOP since 2000. Their despicable primary method has been to attempt to brainwash an unthinking nation of sheep into believing that there is nothing good about the Bush administration and, by extension, America. They have not been peddling hope but hopelessness. If they are successful in this, they believe the can also convince the gullible and the malleable that they are the only ones who can restore a trust in leadership and confidence in America.

Many have been suckered into this perverse despair, as have been Matthews, Olbermann, Gibson, the NYT, Washington Post. But the fact is that although mistakes have been made, America has always been and continues to be the bastian of freedom and the best hope for liberty and prosperity in the world. One need only compare the number of the immigrants to the emigrants. Many Chinese, Hatians and Mexicans have died trying to get to America. Granted, there are too many sheep in the country, but thankfully, they are out numbered by the eagles who have always been proud of America; and rest assured, that if each of us keeps faith in America and does our part, God will continue to shed his grace on thee. To some extent, the current economic crisis has been fueled by the Democrats faithlessness and their continual and vocal doom forecasts for America -- a self-fulfilling prophecy so to speak. Remember what FDR said during the Great Depression, "You have nothing to fear, but fear itself." Don't let Obama poison your minds with his rhetoric. As soon as it became apparent that he is not the "one we've been waiting for," he switched from the audacity of hope to the greater audacity of hopelessness.

Bonfire of the vanities - the Wall Street Crisis

So Bear Stearns and Lehman Brothers go down the tubes and Merrill Lynch is sold.  The cause is Banker's Greed, fueled by Greenspan's low interest rates, easy credit, adjustable rate mortgages, and high credit card rates.  The invention of hedge funds and derivatives only served to camouflage the deteriorating financial stability of the firms that have controlled too much of the economy for too long.  Numerous home mortages bundled into a derivative that only generates a "tranch" or sliver of all its components has become so complex that in one case of mortgage foreclosure, the judge refused to oust the home owner because the true mortgagee could no longer be determined.  Each time a mortgage is sold, a commission is paid and the value shrinks a bit and after many sales of the same mortgage, the cumulative effect of the commissions strains the value.  The high prices of homes were the direct result of easy credit and low or no down payments which caused the demand to run ahead of supply.  Adjustable rate mortgages, another creation of Banker's Greed, were the straws that broke the camels' backs and their loads of upside-down mortgages to tumble down the mountain of greed into the abyss of default.  How to fix it?  1.  Start with a national usury law.  The democrats and liberals won't have it because it would prevent the working poor to get "payday loans" at 400% APR.  The benefits of the law would limit VISA and MASTERCARD from charging so much interest  and penalties that they can cover the defaults of the spendthrifts and continue issuing cards to the poor credit risks  2.  Lower the limits of unsecured credit card debt to, say, $3,000 per card.  3.  No adjustable rate mortgages.  4.  No sale of a mortgage by the original mortgagor to a third party.  5. Minimum down payments of at least 15% cash.  6. No more second mortgages.  You may say, and with some justification, that this program will cripple sales of homes, the home construction industry, home furnishings and reduce the cities' revenue from real property taxes.  But what are we going to do, the young couples yearning for the American dream of a home or condo are no match for the Banker's Greed just as minors are no match for the lure of tobacco ads.  Once adjusted to this scheme, the home owner can be assured of keeping their homes in tough economic times.

SARAH PALIN - JUST THE INEXPERIENCE WE NEED

Sarah Palin, Just the Inexperience We Need

At last, a person with no Washington experience who has proven that changing government is not only possible but doable. You have no Capitol experience at "log rolling," ear-marking, filibustering, obfuscating, obstructing or mean spirited denying of the people's right to produce energy.  You have no experience at demeaning, defaming, belittling, and humiliating Senate hearing witnesses and Supreme Court nominees. You own no stock in Halliburton, Lockheed, or Martin-Marietta. You've never sat on the boards of Wal-Mart, The Annenberg Challenge, or The Woods Foundation. You don't even know Rev. Wright, William Ayers, Bernadine Dorn, Father Pflager, Louis Farrakhan, or Tony Rezko. You probably know nothing of Black Liberation Theology. You and Mr. Palin know labor from the inside, not from some self-interested union official who would deny the worker a secret ballot. Avoiding war starts with loving life and you have proved that you love life abundantly. Yet, you and Mr. Palin have allowed your son to join the Army, realizing that the preservation of our nation is paramount and admits of no appeasement of our enemies for a mere hope of peace. You are just the inexperience we need. Mike Snyder, Chicago.

OBAMA - A CHILD OF CRITICAL THEORY

Obama tells us that his childhood was influenced by Frank in Hawaii.  Frank was a fellow traveler and intellectual peer of his socialist mother and his socialist maternal grandparents.  So Obama was right at home in Chicago where socialism had a long history from Eugene V. Debs, the 1894 railway union organizer so prominent in the Pullman riots, to Saul Alinisky, who developed the model of in-your-face instigation for social change - boycotts, protests, pickets, and all that.  Alinsky's model has been adapted by community organizers as the most effective tool for the redistribution of a community's wealth.  Frank, his  mother, his professors, his pastor were all products of critical theory whether they thought about it or not.

Critical theory developed out of the philosophies of disaffected German communists who immigrated to the United States from Franfurt in 1937.  The more prominent were invited to Columbia University by its president.  The history of critical theory is readily available on Wikipedia.  Critical theory involves the analysis of societies deficiencies across a broad spectrum followed by social engineering to correct the deficiencies by wholesale displacement of traditional culture and replacing it completely with social inventions thought to free the constipated self-centered, selfish mind of its strictures.  Free of its past, the mind will be open to embracing class identification and the practice of work and reward on the need of the class rather than the individual.  Bernard Marcuse, a Berkely professor, was the leading proponent of critical theory in the fifties.  His advocation of such mind expanding adventures as sexual freedom contributed to divorcing the individual from his puritannical past and has, among other things, led to the acceptance of abortion as an exercise of a woman's constitutional right of privacy rather than an act of infanticide.  Sometimes, however, we regress and sentence Scott Petersons to death for killing their unborn.  It depends.  Mind expanding drugs are helpful in separating the mind from its past and its cultural and moral restraints.  Enough of these over a long period of time and the user will not know who he is, who he was, why he's here or what he's doing.  He had become the perfect subject for building a new culture and a soldier in a new world order.

Critical theory is handy for engineering society so that we think we feel good.  It prides itself on being progressive.  One of its features is that it is quite dogmatic.  It suffers no argument and any fool who dares to challenge it is an obstacle to progress.  And his influence within society must be eliminated.  Therefore, those content with the status quo, slow growth, or "staying the course" must be vilified and demonized.

A hallmark of the critical theorists is the demonization of anyone and anything that will interfere with a leveling of society to the lowest common denominator.  Take the wealthy for example.  They are just plain evil, greedy, selfish, and disrespectful and incapable of comprehending the non-wealthy.  Not only is it evil to be wealthy, it is evil to want to be wealthy.  Not that you want to be poor, but it is better for society if you are willing to accept less in order to share  more.  So you better be prepared to accept less from the "change you can belief in."  In order for its adherents to succeed, they must completely discredit the status quo and convince the people that they are miserable and in need of a catharsis.  In clearing the ground for the acceptanace of a "new order,"  the critical theorists find it helpful to invent new courses of conduct suitable for class consumption.  Hereafter, for example, it will be unacceptable to address a lady as "girl" or to distinguish among men, homosexuals, and women in any societal endeavor, occupation or recreation.  Political correctness is another deprivation of individuality, but it must be acceptable because is for the "greater good."  Economics must evolve from an endeavor to feed and shelter a family to feeding and sheltering the world.  Medicine must evolve from a profession to cure a fortuitous illness or injury to a governmental obligation to cure aids, alcoholism, drug addiction, unwanted pregnancies and all sorts of self inflicted ailments and injuries at the expense of all.

No one must be poor, or sick or unemployed until the "change" has failed to deliver and all are poor, sick and unemployed.  We are a global society, afterall, we are all citizens of the world and it just wouldn't be fair otherwise.  So this is where Obama is coming from, and when he says real change, he means real change.  Where once we could rely upon the checks and balances of a three branch government, we cannot expect a democratic congress to check the power of Obama if elected.  Nancy Peolosi is a good example of "real change."  She hasn't delivered on any of her 2006 campaign promises, but she has strangled the opposition and practically eliminated the peoples' ability to conduct a fair debate on urgent issues and vote "yea" or "nay."  We can't expect any checking our balancing out of her. The Supreme Court will only check Obama's transformation of our society until the next justice is appointed.  If you don't think we are tumbling head long down a coal chute read, James Cone's Black Power and Black Liberation Theology.  This is the theology of Rev. Wright, Obama's  pastor and mentor for twenty years.

RUSSIAN AGRESSION

NEVER TRUST THE RUSSIANS AND BE PREPARED FOR ANYTHING. On the night of October 22, 1972, I was the second mate on the S.S. ADABELLE LYKES bound from New Orleans to Casablanca. We were navigating through the Florida Straits between Cuba and Florida. Commencing, at about 11:00 p.m. when we were somewhere between Dry Tortugas and Key West, we were challenged by a group of five naval vessels to identify ourselves. We thought nothing of it because the Navy frequently had exercises in that area. But when we were challenged five times between Key West and Fowey Rocks, we knew something was up. We had not heard President Kennedy's speech given earlier that evening.

The next day, after riding with the Gulf Stream up the east coast of Florida, we turned east to cross the Atlantic. About four hours later, we came upon a Soviet cargo ship stopped in the water with a destroyer escort lying across her bow. This was clearly a blockade. On the deck of the Soviet ship, we could see at least six cylindrical tubes about 70 feet long and five feet in diameter. The officers' dining salon was usually a very happy place with a lot of jovial chatter but that evening it was gloomy with worry and anxiety.

JFK's speech is to be studied and remembered. Among the things he said then which have serious implications in today's challenges are the following:

The size of this undertaking makes clear that it has been planned for some months. Yet, only last month, after I had made clear the distinction between any introduction of ground-to-ground missiles and the existence of defensive antiaircraft missiles, the Soviet Government publicly stated on September 11 that, and I quote, "the armaments and military equipment sent to Cuba are designed exclusively for defensive purposes," that there is, and I quote the Soviet Government, "there is no need for the Soviet Government to shift its weapons for a retaliatory blow to any other country, for instance Cuba," and that, and I quote their government, "the Soviet Union has so powerful rockets to carry these nuclear warheads that there is no need to search for sites for them beyond the boundaries of the Soviet Union."

That statement was false.

* * *

Only last Thursday, as evidence of this rapid offensive buildup was already in my hand, Soviet Foreign Minister Gromyko told me in my office that he was instructed to make it clear once again, as he said his government had already done, that Soviet assistance to Cuba, and I quote, "pursued solely the purpose of contributing to the defense capabilities of Cuba," that, and I quote him, "training by Soviet specialists of Cuban nationals in handling defensive armaments was by no means offensive, and if it were otherwise," Mr. Gromyko went on, "the Soviet Government would never become involved in rendering such assistance."

That statement also was false.

* * *

The 1930's taught us a clear lesson: aggressive conduct, if allowed to go unchecked and unchallenged, ultimately leads to war. This nation is opposed to war. We are also true to our word. Our unswerving objective, therefore, must be to prevent the use of these missiles against this or any other country, and to secure their withdrawal or elimination from the Western Hemisphere.

* * *

This Nation is prepared to present its case against the Soviet threat to peace, and our own proposals for a peaceful world, at any time and in any forum -- in the OAS, in the United Nations, or in any other meeting that could be useful -- without limiting our freedom of action. We have in the past made strenuous efforts to limit the spread of nuclear weapons. We have proposed the elimination of all arms and military bases in a fair and effective disarmament treaty. We are prepared to discuss new proposals for the removal of tensions on both sides, including the possibilities of a genuinely independent Cuba, free to determine its own destiny. We have no wish to war with the Soviet Union -- for we are a peaceful people who desire to live in peace with all other peoples.

But it is difficult to settle or even discuss these problems in an atmosphere of intimidation. That is why this latest Soviet threat -- or any other threat which is made either independently or in response to our actions this week-- must and will be met with determination. Any hostile move anywhere in the world against the safety and freedom of peoples to whom we are committed, including in particular the brave people of West Berlin, will be met by whatever action is needed.

Because of President Kennedy's character, his WWII navy experience, and his personal pain from combat, he had the fortitude and resolve to confront the Soviets forcefully and unequivocally, mincing no words and giving no quarter. It was a stare down and as the world knows, "Khrushchev blinked."

We are in much the same position with Putin today as we were in 1972 with Khrushchev. Putin would have the world believe that we are putting missiles in Europe and protecting the sovereignty of Georgia as Russia did in Cuba in 1972. Ah! But there is a marked distinction between defensive missile interceptors and offensive missiles designed and intended for the annihilation of a nation.

I think that encounter was one of our President's and our nation's proudest moments. I also think that it was the beginning of the end of the cold war. No one was so foolish as to suggest that President Kennedy was "shooting from the hip." No one criticized him for not assembling a coalition of nations and getting the permission of the UN before he took action. He knew what had to be done and he did it.

In less than three months, we must decide who to elect as our next President. Obama comes from the worlds of academia and law. Worlds of scholarly debates, faculty teas, and rhetoric practice. But life isn't all scholarly tea and crumpets; life is Khrushchevs and Putins, energy crises, faulty intelligence, economic downturns, mistakes in borrowing and lending, unemployment, and unemployables. I can't imagine Obama facing down Putin or decisively confronting any of the lesser challenges of a president. Pray for guidance and vote for McCain.

Mike Snyder - August 20, 2008
